Success Story - Margie Merritt
Margie joined the Sandtown Middle School’s Youth Council in 2005 as a 6th grader. As part of her application’s essay, Margie explained she should be chosen because she “likes to tell people about health problems that kids our age have, and stuff we need to stay away from”.

Jacqueline Hicks, the nurse at Sandtown, comments that Margie is the model H2 participant. Margie represents H2 at school functions (such as the kick-off dinner for Red Ribbon Week). Margie is noticeably more outgoing and assertive. She has taken a leadership role in talking about H2 to her peers. Because of her initiative, two of her best friends are joining H2 this year.
Margie’s mother states that Margie has made the entire family more aware of their eating habits. Mom states that Margie speaks up when they are eating “the less than healthy” foods. She said that Margie comes home after every Youth Council meeting and tells the family what she has learned. Both Margie and her family fully support H2 by participating in all events such as the H2 Kick-Off and the Whole Foods 5% Day Recipient event.

Healthy Habits By: Margie Merritt |

"Come on Ashley," said Alexis. "I can’t catch up," said Ashley as they walked the track. "I really need to start exercising because I can’t keep up with you," said Ashley. "You are getting kind of …". "I know I’m getting bigger but it is really hard for me to exercise because I am so big."
Later that day Alexis saw Ashley in the cafeteria eating a plate of fries and ice cream. Alexis walked up to her and said, “Why don’t you substitute those fries and ice cream for an apple and a salad?” Moral of the story? Eat healthy and exercise. |
